What standards apply to ILDS?
Expectations
All NHS-funded libraries in England are expected to participate in, and contribute resources to, interlending and document supply (ILDS). Libraries must supply books and articles in response to requests from other NHS libraries, and may supply other items, and to other libraries, at their discretion. While contributions will vary because of funding, staffing capacity or specialty, ILDS must not be used as a substitute for a well maintained and properly resourced local collection.
General principles
ILDS services should be governed by these principles:
- Strive for excellent customer service
- Optimise the use of NHS owned resources
- Be cost effective; use free sources before costed ones but also take into account the amount of staff time needed to process the request
- Digital by default
- Streamline by making use of shared and interoperable systems
- Be aware of what you can and cannot do under the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) NHS Licence Plus and copyright legislation
- Comply with GDPR and data protection legislation
