What resources are searched through the Knowledge and Library Hub?
The NHS Knowledge and Library Hub is designed to provide quick and easy access to information relevant to staff and learners in health and care. A search of the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub will retrieve items from EBSCO’s extensive Knowledge Base. We have selected the datasets listed below in EBSCO’s Knowledge Base to give optimal results. You can see these datasets listed in the 'Databases' tab in EBSCOadmin (in the profile (hee_eds)). Generally speaking there is no need for you to make any changes to this list. (However see this FAQ on locally purchased EBSCO databases.) The list may be updated from time to time at national level. These datasets do not include all the bibliographic databases purchased nationally. They include CINAHL and Medline which are supplied by EBSCO. However they do not include the databases supplied by ProQuest and Wolters Kluwer such as BNI and EMBASE. This also means that BNI, EMBASE etc are not available when you select to 'Limit by Databases' in a search. Searching the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub does not replace the need for structured searching of individual databases, especially when the search needs to be reported and reproduced. Structured searches of the nationally purchased databases should be carried out in the provider interfaces, all of which are linked from the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. What access options might I see against search results in the Knowledge and Library Hub?
Depending on the material type, and whether you subscribe to a particular resource, you may see one or more access options against search results. If you aren't logged into OpenAthens in that browser session, you will be prompted to do so at the point of clicking one of these buttons. However if the resource is open access, you won't be prompted. A 'Get PDF' button - this takes you direct to the article in PDF format. This button is generated by LibKey. A 'PDF Full Text' button - this takes you direct to the article in PDF format. This button is generated by EBSCO and displays for EBSCO content only, instead of the 'Get PDF' button. An 'HTML Full Text' button - this takes you direct to the article in HTML format. This button is generated by EBSCO and displays for EBSCO content only. An 'Access Item' button - this takes you to the full-text on the publisher's website. This displays if a link to a PDF can't be generated by LibKey or EBSCO. A 'View Complete Issue' button - this takes you to Browzine to see the article in the context of the rest of the journal issue it was published in. A 'Request this item' button - this launches a form pre-populated with the bibliographic details of the item - you need to fill in your contact details and click 'Submit'. You won't be prompted to authenticate with OpenAthens in order to complete the form. A 'WMER abstract' or similar - the record within an NHS repository metadata only There is more information on LibKey and Browzine integration in this FAQ. See also the FAQs on searching and results generally for further detail.

How are search results ranked on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub?
Search results are ranked using EBSCO’s relevance algorithm. Items will appear higher up in a results list if the search term matches frequently with EBSCO’s metadata and the item’s full-text. If the matches appear in certain fields then they are weighted as being more important than others. These weighted fields include: Subject heading Title Author-supplied keywords Abstract Authors Full-text Integrated LMS records and those from NHS repositories such as Amber and WMER are given additional weight but we do not apply the additional boost that could be added as this can result in these results being too dominant. For more information, see EBSCO's FAQ on how relevance ranking is determined in EBSCO Discovery Service.

Why can I see a "Get PDF" button and a "Request this Item" button on the same item?
This situation usually occurs with hybrid journals where some articles are free and others are subscription-only. EBSCO's discovery system reads items at the journal level , and the journal is tagged as either subscription-based OR open access, it cannot be both. To prevent users trying to access dead links, by default hybrid journals are listed as subscription-based, hence why open access articles in hybrid journals that you do not subscribe to will have a "Request this Item" link even though it is freely available online. This can also occur with records from NHS repositories such as Amber and WMER. The "Get PDF" button is powered by Libkey rather than EBSCO, and they have a comprehensive knowledgebase of open access articles, regardless of which journal they are indexed in. This then is why the two links occur. We have discussed with EBSCO the possibility of suppressing the "Request this Item" button if the "Get PDF" button is available, but have ultimately agreed that we need to leave the two links in place. Firstly, Third Iron / LibKey may not always be 100% reliable in providing access, so the "Request this Item" function offers an alternative route for end-users to request the item if there are any issues. Additionally having both links displaying is a robust technical option; suppressing one link depending on the other being present is more prone to error. While at first glance this appears to be confusing for end-users, in reality we have found that they will click on the link that offers them the full text, and only use the "Request this item" button if that fails.

Can library catalogue information be retrieved in the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub?
Regional library catalogues have been integrated with the Hub with YorCat the final one in 2024. Further work will follow to enhance ebook linking. The regional LMS are added as a whole catalogue with live holdings information. This can result in a large number of print and ebook records being displayed for some searches. You can set a default Local Library Limiter to reduce this by only showing print and ebooks from your local collection. Contact the Service Desk for assistance with this. Additional FAQ have been prepared about how records from the SWIMS library catalogue display.

Why am I not seeing "Get PDF" buttons against articles from ClinicalKey in the Knowledge and Library Hub?
ClinicalKey subscribers will generally not see 'Get PDF' buttons below results from ClinicalKey in the Knowledge and Library Hub, but you will see buttons for 'Access Online' and 'View Complete Issue'. The exception to this is where the article is available Open Access on the Science Direct web site. Get PDF will appear and work correctly taking the user straight to the article. While this will mean the download is not counted in ClinicalKey this is appropriate as you would not need a subscription to access the article anyway. The reason for this is that the ClinicalKey website does not support a direct-to-PDF linking mechanism. Other Third Iron products (e.g. Libkey Nomad, Libkey Link etc) will provide Article Links that will link to the html article level information in ClinicalKey, instead of to the PDF. EBSCO Discovery System does not support these Article Links at the current time, hence why they are not visible in the Knowledge and Library Hub, but they are in the process of development.

How do print journals display on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub?
For articles in journals which are within the subscription date range of the print journal you see an 'Access Item' button: Access Item button If you click this you are taken to EBSCO's Full Text Finder page which displays a link to request the item: Please see the FAQ on options for improving this display. For articles in journals outside the subscription date range of the print journal you see a 'Request this item' button: Request this item button This is the same as all other resources for which your library doesn't have a subscription.

How can I improve the display of print journals in the Knowledge and Library Hub?
If you have print journals, there are options available to improve the display for your end users. Please also see the FAQ on the default display for print journals. Using these options, the user can click on the Access Item button and one of the following messages will display: This item is available in print. Visit the library to access it. This item is available in print. Request a copy here. This item is available in print. To access it, visit the library in person or request a copy here. The wording of these messages can be customised. Option 1 will display text on the screen, although this can be customised to provide a link to a local 'contact us' webpage, or to your library's entry on HLISD. Options 2 and 3 open a pre-populated ILL form. How to set up your preferred option 1. Find the package name assigned to your print journal holdings. To do this, search Holdings Management (HLM) for a title of a print journal that you hold. You will retrieve one or more packages, and you can then filter the results on 'Selected'. The package name appears in the left-hand column. 2. Populate the Links section in Holdings Management Go to Holdings Management and click on 'Links' Click on 'New Link' Then select 'Create New Link' and then click 'Continue with Selection' 3. Enter details as follows. For option 1: Link name: Print access (ns??????) [Enter your EBSCO customer ID. You can see this top right logged into EBSCOadmin.
