Refworks Access

How do I get a RefWorks account? I'm an NHS librarian.
RefWorks has now been set up so that library staff can create an account and login using their OpenAthens details. Note: the OpenAthens account needs to have the Role set as Library Staff in order for this to work. Go to https://refworks.proquest.com. You will see this sign in box: Click on the dark blue Use login from my institution button. Scroll to or search for NHS in England and select this option. Do not choose OpenAthens here. You should now be taken to an OpenAthens sign in box: Login with your OpenAthens account (or use the "Find your institution" option if necessary). [Note: if you are already logged in to OpenAthens in your browser, you may not see the OpenAthens login screen, but will just be taken automatically though to the next step, asking you to enter your email address.] You will then see this screen: Enter your email address and click on the blue Sign Up button. You may be asked to accept cookies to proceed. [There is a bug in the RefWorks system that sometimes leaves a blank box on top of the screen at this point, which you can’t move. We have found that if you refresh your browser, you get to the next screen.] You then see this screen: Add your details, then click on Next, and keep clicking on Next to work through the tutorial. You are then logged in to RefWorks. You only have to do this process once. Each time you then want to use RefWorks, you just go to https://refworks.proquest.com, click on the Use login from my institution button, scroll down to choose the NHS in England option, and login with your OpenAthens account. Issues: If you get this screen it may be because you don't have the correct Role associated with your OpenAthens account. Please ask your OpenAthens administrator to check that your Role attribute is set to Library Staff, and then try the process again. If you have the correct role and continue to have problems, please log a new ticket with the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub Service Desk (https://support.library.hee.nhs.uk), with all the relevant details.

How do I link my RefWorks account to my OpenAthens account?
If you already have an account set up with RefWorks, you can link this to your OpenAthens account. Go to RefWorks (https://refworks.proquest.com) and login with your RefWorks details. In the top right hand corner, click on your name to open out the user menu: Click on Settings. Scroll down the page to the section labelled Institutional Credentials: Click on the Associate Credentials button. You will then be taken to an OpenAthens login page – enter your OpenAthens username and password. You should then return to the RefWorks page, with a brief message that says “Welcome back! Your account is now associated with your institutional login.” When you next need to login to RefWorks, you can choose the Use login from my institution button, scroll down the drop-down list to the bottom, select NHS in England, and login that way.

How do I request a RefWorks account for non-library staff?
All NHS library staff have access to RefWorks via their OpenAthens accounts, but this has not been enabled for other members of NHS staff. However, we can provide RefWorks accounts for other members of NHS staff if they are expert or regular searchers of bibliographic databases. To request a RefWorks account for non-library staff please complete this short request form and a member of the service desk team will set-up the account. To fill in this form, you will need a service desk account within Freshservice (the service desk software that we use). This is very quick to set up - see our FAQ: How do I request access to and use the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub Service Desk?
